I've been reading the Screwtape Letters off and on, and I can't remember which letter it's in, but Lewis mentions this sort of "good scruples" principle for the avoiding of scandal. Now I understand what he meant! The reference he gave was rather difficult to understand, which was probably intentional seeing as how it was from Screwtape's point of view.
I like how you put it about devotions and the like being "icing on the cake." Icing adds flavor and even beauty to a cake, but on its own, it doesn't do any good.
You shall not judge, dang that's everyone's favorite quote. I'm sure someone out there thinks it's one of the Ten Commandments. My grandmother quoted that to me one time, because we judge gays too much apparently. I definitely know people who would think that eating meat on Friday makes you not Catholic or less of a Catholic. I've met people who think devotionals are what make you Catholic/Christian. But, like you said, it's not just going through the motions. It's about more than that, even if you can't always find it or see it right in front of you. I've also needed that lesson of not doing something that's not intrinsically evil because other people might not like it. I feel like that's one side of a balanced equation that I'm always trying to learn the other side of. If you try to please other people your whole life, you are going to be miserable. I've learned that firsthand. But I've got to be balanced. I also can't go off and do whatever I want, because that will also result in me being miserable.
I've had some run-ins with such Catholics myself. Sometimes them seem to do it out of fear, others out of pride, and others...I don't know. I'd honestly like to meet more of them, not because they're fun to hang around with, but just to understand where they're coming from.
You know, Grace, I'd like to see what you can come up with for the Ten Suggestions, with "Thou shalt not judge" being number one! It would be a good laugh.
Oh, yes. Mr. O'Brien has a Miley Cyrus costume. My mom saw it on Facebook and said it scarred her for life. Then, of course she tried to show it to me!

I can relate to all of this, Grace. Ask me about my Miley Cyrus costume.

DeleteI'd say I'm surprised, except I'm not. XD Isn't it funny how moms will say/do things like that?
